Loblaw and unions return to the discussion table

Loblaw Cos. Ltd. came back to the table to resume talks with union workers yesterday, after they went on strike across nine stores in southern Ontario on Wednesday.

The provincial labour ministry intervened and asked the United Food and Commercial Workers union to take up talks with Loblaw once again.

The Toronto Star reported that a media blackout was imposed during Thursday’s talks. The provincial government hopes to see an end to this deadlock before the July 5 deadline is passed following which 12,000 workers will walk off their jobs across 61 stores in the GTA, Peterborough, Kingston, Ottawa and London regions. Earlier this week, 1,600 workers in the Real Canadian Superstores in Windsor and close by areas went on strike.

According to the Star, Loblaw says all nine stores remain open, but with modified store hours (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and a reduction of some in-store services.
